by architect Mathias Lehner, MSc

Mathias Lehner reports on his work on the 2040-2050 urban development plan for Zaanstad, a neighboring city of Amsterdam with 160,000 inhabitants that is set to grow rapidly to 200,000. This spatial vision for the future, entitled ‘Creating Space’, was adopted by the municipal council at the end of 2024 and describes the principles of the city’s future qualitative development. The central question is: How do we enable a good life for everyone within ecological limits?

Mathias Lehner works as an urban planner for the Dutch municipality of Zaanstad. He is an expert in nature-inclusive design for the province of Utrecht and in 2014 founded the platform nextcity.nl for quality of life in the city – for people, fauna and flora. Mathias teaches in Amsterdam at the Academy of Architecture and the University of Applied Sciences. See also linkedin.com/in/mathiaslehner/
