webinar for free by Dipl.Ing. Marco Schmidt, TU Berlin

This huge concrete structure from the Second World War has been transformed into a green Bunker with a 560- meter green mountain path and a 1,400 m2 garden at the top, as well as a restaurant, hotel rooms and indoor sports facilities.

Preserving the bunker was a major challenge due to its huge dimensions, especially in terms of sustainability.

Is there sufficient public awareness of the gray energy stored in such existing buildings? First of all, gray energy is everything that had to be spent on the construction, operation and dismantling of a building and is now stored in the existing building.

However, it is not just a question of energy, but above all a question of resources: concrete, steel, electrical and water pipes – all of this is built into our existing buildings and can potentially be reused. However, as recycling, especially of concrete, involves a great deal of effort, it is better to preserve buildings and the recyclable materials they contain. The bunker in St. Pauli is a prime example of how something like this can succeed even in the most difficult cases.
