Michael Wassilios Evangelou

Michael Evangelou received his Diploma in Biology in January 2003 from the RWTH Aachen. In May 2007 he received his Ph.D. for his research on "Biochelators as an alternative to EDTA and other synthetic chelators for the phytoextraction of heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Pb) from soil." from the RWTH Aachen. During his Ph.D.-thesis he was a scholaship holder of the Friedrich-Naumann Stiftung and the RWTH-Graduiertenförderung.

In October 2007 he joined the soil protection group of the Institute of Terrestrial Ecosystems (ITES) at the ETH Zürich. Between October 2007 and October 2009 he was a scholarship holder of the DFG (German Research Foundation). Since 2009 he holds the position of senior scientist.

His research has focused on the production of biomass (trees) on contaminated land for bioenergy purposes as well as looking into metal uptake by plants and the use of soils amendments (biochar, organic matter etc.) to stabilize contaminants in soils.
