Kaarin Taipale

Kaarin Taipale has over thirty years of professional experience with issues of urban sustainability, urban development, the built environment and local government, both at the local and global levels, as well in the private as public sectors, and in civil society. She has a solid record in public sector management within local government; she is a seasoned leader with broad experience developing expert organizations. She has successfully headed a global association of cities and is at home in the context of the United Nations.
She is an accomplished writer, who has published actively and taken part in public debates in daily newspapers. She is a fluent speaker, who is often invited to facilitate sessions, or to lecture on urban issues in Finland as well as abroad, both in universities and in professional conferences.

Kaarin Taipale is currently working on her Ph.D. at the Helsinki University of Technology (Department of Architecture, Urban Studies). She is guest professor (“jubileumsprofessor”) in the Urban Laboratory at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. Her areas of expertise and research are urban sustainability, public space, role of cities and “glocalization”. On behalf of the Ministry of the Environment of Finland she leads a global Marrakech Task Force on Sustainable Buildings and Construction. She is member of the Commission of the Port of Helsinki.
Taipale was educated as an architect at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, and received a Master’s Degree in Historic Preservation at Columbia University in New York. She has worked as an architect in Zurich, New York and Helsinki; as the Editor of the Finnish Architectural Review; and as the Chief Executive of the Building Control Department of Helsinki.
From 2000 to 2003, as Chairperson of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, she was both political representative and expert on urban issues in several United Nations’ and other intergovernmental meetings, e.g. WSSD in Johannesburg in 2002.
